Exclusive Interview With Kevin Ma, Founder Of Hypebeast

Can you explain us your background and what was your motivation to create Hypebeast?

My background was not in the fashion industry. I studied business and psychology. After I graduated, I worked in the finance industry but it wasn’t really what I wanted to do. While working at the bank, I was really into fashion, music and street culture. So, as a side project I decided to create Hypebeast to gather all the fashion, culture, and music news into one place. Slowly, it became my full time job and now my business.

Do you feel that with Internet everything is possible?

The internet is a platform where anyone and any brand can easily express their creativity. It allows people to get feed back instantaneously. I don’t know if everything is possible with the internet but it sure opens a lot of doors.

Since the beginning you promote Streetwear and the culture surrounding it. How can you explain that the street culture has become so popular over the years?

I think the public’s interest and passion in street culture has always been there. The internet has opened up possibilities for those that don’t live in large cities to participate in this cultural phenomenon.

You promote a lot French brands. How would you define the French touch?

Paris, being a high fashion capital, obviously has its influences on the French touch. I feel that French street brands are really good at focusing on cutting and at the same time, like to keep things fun and quirky.

What are your best places to do shopping in the world?

Tokyo. The Japanese are really good curators of fashion. They can find things from around the world that would not easily be found in other cities.

What are you next projects?

We are working very hard to create a great shopping experience on our online store. Our readers can learn more about and purchase a piece from those quality brands we passionately write about on our website.
