Maison Kitsuné is pleased to welcome the exclusive exhibition of Four Paintings by multitalented artist Mtendere ‘Teebs’ Mandowa.

Mtendere Mandowa was born in 1987, in New York, with Malawi and Barbados origins. He is a producer, a painter, and contributing member of the noted LA based Brainfeeder record label under the moniker Teebs. His paintings often reflect his music production: collaging, overlapping and mixing imagery with painted gestures to create a meditative and abstract visual landscape. The work emanates a sense of organic appeal with feelings of warmth and rhythm coalescing. At times the works seem overgrown with organic shapes bending and folding atop one another while at other times the compositions remain sparse and refined.

Four Paintings is a showing of two large drawings alongside a blanket and a digital machine learned piece. The hand sewn blankets shapes, the weaving line drawings and machine learning connections all share an idea of pattern making and when I think of this, protection and identity come to mind. I find that patterns in clothing, art and landscapes have always helped describe individuals in societies. Growing up American with parents who immigrated here brought lots of different forms of individuality together in my life and I found all those moments to be beautiful. I felt as though making my own patterns would kick start my process of self-identity.
